“Who Marries Whom?”: Two young engaged couples get more than they bargained for when the men test their fiancées’ fidelity on a bet. But just what do they learn about themselves? Director Roger Brunyate discusses the plot and the morality of Così fan tutte.
We are pleased to announce that distinguished coach, conductor, and Mozart specialist Martin Isepp will be directing this production of Così fan tutte. Mr. Isepp was born in Vienna in 1930, the son of a well-known opera singer. He emigrated to Britain, and studied at Oxford and the Royal Academy. Principally active as a collaborative pianist, he has had a distinguished career as a vocal accompanist, with numerous recordings to his credit. As an operatic coach, he joined the music staff at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera (on of the most important centers for Mozart in the world) in 1957, becoming chief coach in 1973; he has been there almost every season since, missing only two years out of forty-four.
For 1973 to 1976, he was head of the Opera program at the Juilliard School. Since 1990, he has been at the Metropolitan Opera, working mainly with the Young Artist Program, but also serving on the coaching and conducting staff in the main house. He currently holds a similar visiting position with the Canadian Opera in Toronto. He has given numerous master-classes and residencies in opera and song literature in colleges throughout the world.
Although his work as a conductor is more recent than his long-established career as a coach, he has conductued, among others, for the Glyndebourne Touring Opera (Le nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte), the Washington Opera (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), the Canadian Opera (The Turn of the Screw and more Mozart), and at the Metropolitan Opera (Così fan tutte).
